Vietnam and Australia collaborate on research to breed new rice varieties

Australia’s largest rice distributor SunRice Group plans to cooperate with Vietnamese and Australian researchers in research to breed new rice varieties to cope with the impact of climate change and boost rice production and exports from Vietnam’s Kau Long River Plain, the Vietnam News Agency reported on October 30, 2022.

According to the report, the project is a four-year project with a total investment of A$5 million (US$3.5 million) to be implemented by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the University of Queensland, Vietnam’s An Giang University, Can Tho University and the Nine Dragon River Plain Rice Research Institute, and other institutions and research institutes. According to the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIR), the new rice seeds will effectively alleviate the climate change pressure on rice cultivation in the Kau Long River Plain and help solve the water shortage problem faced by rice cultivation in Australia, improving rice production and bringing tangible benefits to agricultural production in both countries.
