The overseas agriculture bureau of the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued annual reports on agricultural biotechnology in many countries

Recently, the overseas agriculture bureau of the U.S. Department of Agriculture released annual reports on agricultural biotechnology in many countries.

Australia

The Australian federal government supports biotechnology research and development and is committed to providing long-term funding. The Australian Productivity Commission has completed a survey of the regulatory responsibilities of agricultural enterprises, focusing on those parts that have a significant impact on Australia’s agricultural competitiveness and productivity, including the regulation of genetically modified products. On July 1, 2021, New South Wales lifted the ban on the cultivation of genetically modified crops, which means that genetically modified crops approved by Australia can be planted in states other than Tasmania.

Italy

The Italian Minister of agriculture, food and forestry policy, as well as farmers’ associations, participants in the agro food industry and scientists, expressed support for emerging biotechnology, such as gene editing technology.

Japan

Japan is a major importer and consumer of genetically modified crops. Japanese regulators have formulated management procedures for genome editing food and agricultural products. In addition, two gene editing products have completed the necessary consultation and notification procedures and have been approved to be produced and sold in the domestic market of Japan.

South Korea

South Korea is revising its existing living modified organisms act to cover emerging biotechnology products, such as gene editing products. South Korea will complete the amendment of this act by the end of 2021. In May 2021, the revised draft published by South Korea includes a pre qualification process, which will determine whether some emerging biotechnology products need to be subject to comprehensive risk assessment or exempted from assessment.

Kenya

Kenya became the first country in the world to approve the environmental release of genetically modified cassava in June 2021. In addition, the application for GM Bt corn will be submitted to the cabinet and approved.

Netherlands

The Ministry of agriculture, nature and food quality of the Netherlands supports the latest view of the European Commission on emerging biotechnology, that is, emerging biotechnology can play an important role in green food production, and believes that the current regulations need to be revised to adapt to future technological development. At the Dutch top department policy conference, gene editing was identified as a key technology for improving important agronomic traits such as plant pest resistance.

Romania

Romania is one of the EU countries with agricultural biotechnology progress. Romania widely imports genetically modified soybean meal as feed. In addition, Romanian farmers hope that the EU regulatory framework will be revised to meet the challenges posed by climate change.

South Africa

South Africa has a sound regulatory system for the safety of genetically modified organisms, which began with the genetically modified Act enacted in 1997. At present, South Africa is one of the top ten GM crop producers in the world and the largest GM crop producer in Africa. To date, South Africa has approved 27 transformants. From 2020 to 2021, the production area of GM products in South Africa is about 2.8 million hectares. At present, South Africa is formulating regulatory policies for emerging breeding technologies and considering regulating them with genetically modified regulations.

Vietnam

Vietnam is a major importer of genetically modified crops and products. It imports a large number of soybeans, corn, dry distiller’s grains, soybean meal and cotton. From December 2020 to August 2021, the Ministry of agriculture and rural development of Vietnam issued food / feed safety certificates for seven transformants (including corn, soybean, cotton and alfalfa). At present, Vietnam has approved 52 transformants for food and feed. From 2020 to 2021, the planting area of transgenic maize in Vietnam exceeded 100000 hectares, which played an important role in resisting meadow moth.

India

Transgenic Bt cotton is the only commercially grown transgenic crop in India. Indian regulators have approved the environmental release of transgenic eggplant and transgenic mustard. At present, India has approved the import of genetically modified soybean oil, rapeseed oil and genetically modified microbial food.

Malaysia

As of August 2021, Malaysia has approved the import and marketing of 50 kinds of GM products, an increase of 8% over the approved amount (46 kinds) in August 2020. Although Malaysia currently has no domestically produced GM products, it will continue to expand the import of approved GM products.
