The Agricultural Economic Research Institute of Mato Grosso, Brazil (imea) predicts that the state’s soybean production will reach a record 39.48 million tons in 2022 / 23, an increase of 1.53% year-on-year, due to the increase of sowing area and attractive prices. Farmers will plant 2022 / 23 soybeans in September this year. According to the first survey results of imea, the sown area of soybean in Mato Grosso State may increase by 2.82% to 11.2 million hectares in 2022 / 23.
Imea initially expects that the sown area of soybean in Mato Grosso will increase due to rising soybean prices, strong demand and strong price trend of soybean products. This may prompt some farmers to convert their pastures to agricultural land, especially in the northeast and North, which are dominated by animal husbandry. Imea expects the soybean yield to be 58.62 bags per hectare, a decrease of 1.26% over the previous year. However, the forecast may change due to factors such as weather, diseases and pests and investment level. The report did not explicitly mention the fertilizer crisis. The crisis has raised costs and triggered supply problems.
Imea estimated that the soybean production in Mato Grosso State in 2021 / 22 was 38.9 million tons, lower than the previous forecast of 39.19 million tons, because of excessive rainfall in the late stage of soybean growth. The 2021 / 22 soybean harvest has been completed. Although the output was lowered, the soybean output in the state increased by 7.85% over the previous year. Imea said that excessive rainfall during the soybean harvest, crop lodging, abnormal pods and delayed delivery have led to an increase in the proportion of damaged soybeans in some areas.
